Il gusto raffinato degli Este per gli oggetti preziosi e curiosi.

Despite the losses and dispersal suffered by the ducal heritage over time, the collections of decorative arts of the Estense Gallery still very effectively illustrate the refined taste which the Este dynasty displayed for precious and curious objects, following in the tradition of the wunderkammern (cabinets of curiosities) which were so popular in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, from Bologna to Milan and from Vienna to Prague and Dresden. The Gallery possesses one of the most important collections of this kind in Italy, comprising precious objects in ivory, semi-precious stones, rock crystal, enamel, wood and majolica, ranging over a period of time from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century.
