“All historical evidence of the ‘visualised Dante’
bears testimony to ‘an idea of Dante’: a stage in the
history of his fortune over time and space”
Lucia Battaglia Ricci, Dante per immagini, 2018
This exhibition is dedicated to the reconstruction of this history, and examines the relationship between Dante’s text and illustrations of it, from the earliest illuminated manuscripts to twentieth-century printed editions. We thus tell the story of the poem’s reception, touching on the history of books and figurative art, giving what is necessarily an overview. This story can be told thanks to the Biblioteca Estense’s rich and varied Dante collection, ranging from the earliest illuminated manuscripts to woodcuts, and from Blake, Doré and Scaramuzza to Nattini, Guttuso, Dalí and Rauschenberg. We end with a film made especially for the exhibition with the students at Bologna’s Academy of Fine Art, which reuses our own Dante illustrations, and thus becomes the latest stage in Dante’s fortune at the Biblioteca.
