Terracotta, 77 x 63 x 39cm
This terracotta sculpture is a preparatory model for the colossal statue in the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale in Sassuolo. It stems from a drawing by Gian Lorenzo Bernini now held at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Indeed, Duke Francesco I d’Este had asked the artist for suggestions regarding sculptural decoration for his residences, to which the great sculptor proposed some ideas for a series of monumental fountains. Gian Lorenzo himself then delegated the actual execution of the model to one of his most talented pupils, Antonio Raggi. Another known version is kept in a private collection.
