The Pinacoteca Nazionale, Ferrara

This is one of Pisano’s masterpieces, in which he succeeds in combining the symmetry and sentiment of Umbrian art with the beautiful colours and delicate tonal harmony typical of the Veneto region. The groups of buildings sloping towards the background are derived from the Carpaccio altarpiece displayed next to this painting, while the clear light and the pale blue mountains on the horizon are inspired by the Cima da Conegliano and the late work of Giovanni Bellini.
